Functioning Prototype

Deliverable 3: Physical Prototype Development

The final deliverable was a functional, upright prototype constructed from polished metal tubing, reinforced 3D printed joints, and custom machined hardware. Built to accommodate upper-limb and lower-limb contralateral movement, the prototype supports adjustable height, angle, length, and handle width to suit different wheelchair users. Internally, the design includes hollow components and hinge access points to allow for future integration of cables and sensors, a consideration aligned with BioSpine’s plans for data tracking and neural interface development.

The prototyping process was iterative. I tested different geometries, printed connection brackets, and fabricated components using a Bambu Lab X1-Carbon and locally sourced parts. I documented key milestones along the way, including ergonomic testing mock-ups and early hinge trials. The finished prototype is both a visual and functional proof-of-concept and provides a foundation for user trials, feedback collection, and ongoing product development.

Video Demonstration

I had the opportunity to show my project to some key funders of BioSpine. Demonstrating its function, aesthetic and the privilege of discussing its future potential.

Final Assembly

My fortnightly updates shared a lot to do with my progress on how I got to this point. I was really proud of the final prototype, where I had the advantage of time, being ahead of schedule, to create a colour coherent presentable product.
